Ouest France on OPEN’s study: Refugees earn more than they cost

Marié Awenig interviewed me in Ouest France about OPEN and Tent’s refugee study for a piece on 20 May.

Governments should make it a priority to integrate refugees and asylum seekers into the labor market. In France, asylum application procedures take time, sometimes years. Meanwhile, asylum seekers are barred from employment. Also, very often, governments do not recognize diplomas from the countries of origin and do not offer enough language training. Finally, refugees are resettled in places where housing is affordable but employment is scarce. All of these things need to be changed.
In sum, it is important to have an open labor market, and public investments to improve the professional and linguistic skills of asylum seekers.
